HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), welcomed HE Sauli Niinistö, former President of Finland, during the 11th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) to discuss advancing global sustainability efforts. The meeting followed Niinistö’s keynote speech at the summit’s opening, where he highlighted critical role of policies and financing in promoting the green economy, as well as the importance of fairness, flexibility and youth participation to ensure that solutions are equitable, inclusive and future-oriented.
Al Tayer highlighted DEWA’s pioneering initiatives to diversify clean energy sources, emphasising its strategic focus on photovoltaic solar power, concentrated solar power (CSP) and energy storage during the meeting. One of DEWA’s most prominent projects is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world based on the independent power producer (IPP) model. The park will have a total production capacity of more than 8,000 MW by 2030, reducing carbon emissions by more than 8.5 million tonnes annually.
Al Tayer highlighted that DEWA ranks first globally in 12 key performance indicators (KPIs) within its areas of work, surpassing leading utilities in Europe and the US. DEWA reduced electricity customer minutes lost (CML) in Dubai to just 0.94 minutes while power transmission and distribution network losses were cut to 2% and water network losses to 4.5%, all of which are the lowest globally.
