As part of its unwavering commitment to Dubai’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050, Dubai Ports Authority, a subsidiary of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), has announced the successful completion of the first LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) bunkering operation in Dubai. This groundbreaking initiative underscores Dubai’s leadership in transitioning to sustainable energy sources while reducing the maritime sector’s carbon footprint.
Marking the first operation of its kind in the region, it represents a significant milestone in fostering sustainable practices and environmental conservation, thereby enhancing Dubai's position as a global hub for sustainable maritime operations.
The landmark LNG bunkering operation was conducted for the cruise ship ‘Costa Smeralda’ at Dubai Harbour. This achievement represents a vital stride toward advancing sustainability in maritime transport and addressing global climate challenges. Aligning with Dubai’s strategic efforts to protect marine ecosystems and mitigate the impacts of climate change, this operation also reflects the UAE’s broader commitments to reducing carbon emissions in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets.
His Excellency Nasser Al Neyadi, Group CEO of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation, stated that the successful execution of the LNG bunkering operation exemplifies the Authority’s dedication to supporting Dubai’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050. “This milestone underscores our commitment to building a sustainable maritime ecosystem in line with Dubai’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050, which seeks to generate 100% of energy capacity from clean sources by mid-century.
Through innovative solutions and robust regulatory frameworks, we aim to overcome existing challenges, create opportunities for environmentally friendly practices, and reinforce Dubai’s status as a global leader in the maritime industry,” he said.
Alternative fuels focus
Captain Ibrahim Al Blooshi, CEO of the Dubai Ports Authority, the regulatory entity overseeing port operations across Dubai, elaborated on the Authority’s efforts to enable LNG bunkering and foster the use of alternative fuels in Dubai. He highlighted the development of a comprehensive Fuel Bunkering Regulation, providing structured guidelines for port operators and LNG suppliers. This regulation adheres to the highest global standards of safety and environmental sustainability, ensuring operational efficiency and compliance with international benchmarks.
He added: “The successful completion of the first LNG bunkering operation in Dubai is a resounding demonstration of our strategic vision to position the emirate as a premier hub for sustainable maritime operations. We remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing the UAE’s environmental objectives by facilitating the adoption of cleaner fuels and supporting regulatory innovation. The Authority continues to collaborate with stakeholders to expand alternative fuel bunkering services, thereby accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices and further enhancing Dubai’s global maritime standing.”
The Dubai Ports Authority’s continued focus on sustainability aligns with the emirate’s vision of fostering innovation, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship. As Dubai propels itself toward achieving its Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050, initiatives like LNG bunkering will remain at the forefront of its efforts to create a sustainable, thriving maritime sector for future generations.
