DEWA becomes first government organisation in the UAE to launch People of Determination Legal Advisor initiative

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched the People of Determination Legal Advisor initiative, to provide legal consultancy for its employees who are People of Determination (POD). This makes DEWA the first government organisation in the UAE that provides such services.

The legal department at DEWA has dedicated a group of legal consultants to receive questions from DEWA’s Employees of Determination. The legal consultants will work with the Absher team, who specialise in supporting POD employees. The legal consultants will reply confidentially to all legal and work-related matters. Following the launch last year of the initiative, regular awareness sessions are being conducted at DEWA on the rights and responsibilities of POD. This initiative was carried out after the legal department received numerous enquiries, which it successfully addressed. DEWA intends to share this pioneering experience with other public organisations in the UAE and externally.

“As a socially responsible organisation that integrates POD, DEWA has launched several social, corporate, innovative and smart initiatives to support and empower POD at work environment, and facilitate their access to services and utilities as per the Dubai Universal Design Code and their access to information according to Smart Dubai Government criteria. This supports the National Policy to empower POD launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to create an inclusive society that ensures empowerment and a decent life for POD and their families. It also supports the ‘My Community... a City for Everyone’ initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, to transform Dubai into a city that is accessible for POD by 2020. DEWA is committed to its corporate social responsibility to contribute to achieving the UAE Vision 2021 to preserve a cohesive society that is proud of its identity and sense of belonging,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

Al Tayer said that DEWA’s efforts to become a leader in undertaking initiatives will make Dubai the world’s happiest city. This progress has helped raise the happiness of DEWA’s Employees of Determination to 99% and Social Happiness about DEWA’s supporting POD to 90.26% in 2018. DEWA intends to work harder to increase this score.

DEWA has launched many programmes and initiatives that help integrate POD in society and the workplace. It has redesigned its Customer Happiness Centres to be easily accessible for them according to the Dubai Universal Design Code and other international standards such as BSI8300. DEWA also provides conservation-tip booklets, locations and working hours of DEWA’s Customer Happiness Centres in Braille. DEWA launched the Absher initiative to support its staff who are POD. The Absher team includes a trained team of qualified specialists in human resources, in addition to a hotline for employees to contact them.

DEWA opened its Innovation Centre at the Dubai Rehabilitation Centre for POD in Al Qusais. The centre provides over 150 students with training on modern technologies.

DEWA won the POD Friendly Government Entity award in 2018 at Dubai Government Excellence Program. DEWA was also recognised at the First International Conference on Inclusive Employment and Occupational Learning, which was organised by the Dubai Community Development Authority (CDA). DEWA received the UAE Ideas Award for promoting voluntary and humanitarian work at the 6th UAE Ideas Conference & Award, which was organised by Dubai Quality Group in 2017.
